In these situations, websites are rarely given priority in terms of dedicating the necessary money and resources to developing a powerful and effective website. In this post we’ll look at more than 40 websites of non-profit/social action organizations who have exemplary web designs.

Thanks for very inspirational list. It will surely increase my website design desire.

Lots of very nice sites, I love the “Housing works” large background picture.
Btw, our site http://www.lab-elle.org is a non-profit association trying to fight gender stereotypes in children books.

This may already be known, but I felt compelled to point out that while we’re really thankful to have made this list as an example of great design, Electricurrent isn’t a not-for-profit organization. Our focus is to work with non-profit and faith-based organizations and to be sure, no one here is driving a Mercedes because of our work, but unless we were listed because of our work (like on CAM International and The Bridgeway Foundation listed above), then by rights, we probably shouldn’t be listed here.

Just trying to help maintain the fidelity of your work – because it’s valuable and greatly appreciated!

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the comment. I actually realized that after the post was published just looking through the sites some more. Obviously I didn’t look that deeply into the content of your site before including it here. I think I got excited about seeing the great website and forgot to actually look at the company behind it. Anyway, I think I’ll remove it from this list but publish it in the general gallery instead.

Andrew December 24th, 2008

Thanks Steve! I appreciate the thought to still include us elsewhere – and again, thanks for the great work you’re doing.

This is a nice list. I think what it shows mostly is that simple layout — easy navigation – combined with something visual, like a Flash or photo bar in the top third, is something that works. No need to be too smart by half in design. Clean and compelling. This is what we strive for in our work.

There is some outstanding designs in this collection. I think it would be helpful to know how many of these sites are built on an open-source CMS like Drupal.
